I absolutely love a U.K. Christmas! I’m definitely not the type to avoid it or even minimise it. I loved working in retail listening to Christmas songs from October. I loved working all over the holidays on elderly wards trying to help the patients have a good time too with karaoke Bublè and special hospital dinners. Then seeing how the festivities can help sick children and their families get through their tough times when I worked as a children’s nurse. I loved having last Christmas all to myself with my family, the first I hadn’t worked in years. I know it’s a huge marketing accomplishment, but it makes me and others happy so that’s all that counts right? However it’s always harder to let go of the stuff you care about so missing Christmas with family and friends this year is a big deal.

At the moment the rain is pouring down with no sign of stopping before the new year. We walk through the wet and humid streets of Asia with no sign of Christmas anywhere. No Christmas songs or trees. No tinsel anywhere and mental shoppers. It’s the wrong weather and I’m dreading having rice for Christmas dinner! I talk to family and friends who are braving the elements to go outside and get everything on their list to make it their version of perfect. I love my life but right now this minute on another miserable 6 hour bus journey I would love nothing more than to be coming home for Christmas. See, you still can get mardy even on holiday!

So what are we going to do about it? Well we are in Cambodia over the festive period. We had thought about blowing the budget and finding a 5 star western hotel in hope that they will have tinsel and maybe even a roast dinner buffet. But that’s just not us really so the plan is to hopefully find a place with an oven and hob close to a good market where we can cook our own dinner. Spend the day at the beach or sightseeing depending where we are and pray for a dry day. Maybe catch the sunrise with a beautiful cup of coffee or sunset with a cool bottle of beer. Maybe we will even make some paper hats to wear right through the day.
What ever happens on our Christmas away, no matter how far removed it is from our traditions, I’m sure we will wake up excited and make the very most of it 🎄

On the other hand, what about everyone that would love nothing more than to get away from it all? Swap places with me! Only joking but stay tuned for some great Christmas escape ideas.
What’s the one thing for you that Christmas would not be right without?
