A night layover in Hong Kong

We had just 24 hours in Hong Kong in between flights from Asia to USA but in that time managed to see a good portion of Hong Kong’s highlights and fit in a 8 hour sleep and leisurely breakfast before heading back to the airport. I think with a good 8 hour layover in Hong Kong you too can see what this city has to offer with easy visa free access and fast reliable public transport there really isnt anything to stop you!

1-2 hours:

After clearing security, immigration and collecting our bags, we took the Airport Express MTR to Kowloon Station and walked through Kowloon Park to our hotel in Tshim Tsa. The MTR is located in the airport and takes just 22mins to reach Kowloon for 90H$ and just 25min if you want to go straight through to Hong Kong central for 100H$. It took 20mins to walk through the park to reach our hotel on the Tsa trim harbour front.

1-2 hours:

We went to tsa waterfront and the Avenue of Stars. We timed it to watch the 15 minute Symphony of Lights at 8pm but the view across Victoria Harbour to the city is awesome any time of day and it’s completely free!

We Took the Star ferry across Victoria harbour costing 2.50H$ which from reaching the ticket office to buying the ticket getting onboard and disembarking at the other side took just 15mins.

1-2 hours:

We walked through the city to the Peak Tram Terminus stopping to take lots of pictures of the fancy buildings and parks and going up the steep hills took around another 25mins. The Peak Tram is 100 years old and climbs very steeply to the peak for 44H$ taking 15 mins for the round trip. We were lucky that there wasn’t really a queue but I guess from looking at the queue lines it could easily be a 30minute wait both getting there and for the return trip.

If you want to access The Peak SkyBar440 then the ticket would be 88H$ but we got magnificent views of Victoria Harbour and Kowloon for free just by passing through the coffee shop and turning left towards Lion Peak. There are places to eat, drink and shop at The Peak as well as pretty walks to see views all over Hong Kong but we didn’t get there till past 9pm so it was too dark to go walking and turning cold.

45mins – 1 hour:

We decieded to take the Subway back to our hotel at tsa tha from Central MTR Station for a good nights sleep before boarding the MTR back to the airport the following morning for our flight to USA. However if you are visiting Hong Kong on a layover then the Express Airport MTR can also be boarded here. It’s around a 10-15min walk from the Peak Tram terminus.

Total = 7 hours from landing and returning back at the airport

To save time you could easily cut the time at the peak to less than an hour including the tram rides. Also, unlike us you won’t have to wait for luggage at the airport if you ask for your bags to be put on the connecting flight for you saving even more time.

Got more time? There are plenty of places to shop both in the city and in Kowloon as well as the amazing mall at Kowloon MTR station, it really is incredible!
We would love to visit Hing Kong again to explore the city in more depth but we had an awesome time in the little time we had on our one night layover ❤️
