How to visit Hawaii on a budget

Hawaii probably isn’t the first place you think of when booking a budget holiday. Its certainly on most peoples places to see list but often is overlooked as a getaway due to the high prices on the islands. Prices are definitely more in Hawaii than even on mainland USA, but we managed to explore the beautiful island of Oahu without breaking our budget.

Flights: Keep your eyes peeled for flight sales or redeem your airmails to make this often expensive flight affordable for a summer getaway.

Accommodation: Hawaii does have some great bargain accommodation on offer. Make use of the available hostels in popular resorts or if you don’t mind staying out of town try Airbnb and meet the locals. There are also plenty of affordable campsites though booking online in advance is essential and sites are only available Wednesday through to Sunday. Oahu really is not a big island so no matter where you choose to stay to keep costs down, you’ll always be right round the corner of something great to do.

Food: Stick to romantic picnics in the park and fun BBQs on the beach to save lots of cash without compromising on enjoyment. (We also got hooked on the $1 hotdog offer at SevenEleven and took advantage of the buy one get one free deals on McDonalds breakfasts!)

Transport: Bus it! It may take longer but its a great way to see the island. They are very convenient with regular buses that can get you everywhere and you get to know the local Hawaiian people better as they often take public transport. The added bonus is a week pass is only $35 and you can even catch one right outside the airport to avoid pricey taxi fares.

Sightseeing: There’s a whole lot of free stuff to do in Oahu besides just relaxing in the sunshine like going to the beach, surfing, snorkelling or hiking into the mountains. You can even visit the Pearl Harbour Monument for free!
